How shall we speak?
“Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” How many of us remember this chant from schoolyards and backyards when we were growing up?
Of course we know all too well that this is a lie! Words in fact can not only hurt, but can bring about much damage to our psyche and our souls. Parents, teachers and other role
models work hard to teach our children to speak kindly to and about each other. Some turn to the Bible in search of help in teaching these lessons. In the book of Proverbs,
chapter 12 this advice is given: “Rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing..”, and Proverbs 21: “1Whoever pursues righteousness and
kindness will find life and honor…….23To watch over mouth and tongue is to keep out of trouble” However, those lessons do not always take. There have been a multitude of
stories in the news lately, both locally and nationally, of people who have spoken words publicly that they have later come to regret.
Let us take some time today to consider the words we speak to others, either in public or private, and consider how they will impact the lives of those around us.
